In this article, we are going to take a closer look at the rotary lobe pump design. We will discuss how exactly they work, some advantages you will experience when using them, and a few of the different applications that use this type of equipment on a regular basis.

What are Rotary Lobe Pumps and How Do They Work?

Rotary lobe pumps are used in a variety of different industries and they are often popular because they offer outstanding sanitary qualities. As you may have guessed, this is important for the food industry for example. They also offer benefits of high efficiency, reliability, and corrosion resistance.

These pumps get their name from the internal parts that are used to construct this design. Inside the pump there are rotating lobes that move without touching one another and create large pumping chambers. There are several different options such as single, double, or triple lobe pumps. The large pumping chambers allow the pumps to handle small solids, slurries, pastes, and many other liquids with ease.

This type of positive displacement pump operates similarly to gear pumps. However, they are different in the fact that the lobes do not make contact as we mentioned previously. Fluid enters the suction side of the pump and is forced to the outer wall of the pump body by the rotating lobes. As the lobes continue to rotate, the large pumping chambers move toward the discharge end of the pump. Since the flow is independent of changes in pressure, the output from the discharge end is relatively constant.

As a result of this efficient design, rotary lobe pumps offer many advantages.

Advantages of Rotary Lobe Pumps

One of the most beneficial things that a rotary lobe pump has to offer is the fact that they can handle medium sized solid particles in the pumping fluid. This is due to the fact that the lobes do not come in contact with each other and because the pumping chambers inside the pump are large enough to handle solid particles. This is an advantage for the food industry. For example, when processing something like cherries, this type of pump is great. The cherries and fluid can move into and through the pump without being damaged or broken down. They are then sent to their desired destination.

Just like the cherries, there are many different scenarios where it is crucial that the product is not negatively impacted. This could be a slurry of solid particles that need transferred from one part of the plant to another, for example. You may also need to transfer a viscous fluid that would be broken down if it traveled through a different style of pump. The correct type of rotary lobe pump will handle the material with care.

Another advantage of these pumps are the continuous discharge. For the most part, they are not influenced by the system pressure and will maintain a continuous and constant flow of material. This may be important for a food packaging process because precise quantities and amounts need to be distributed to each package.

Lastly, rotary lobe pumps are rugged and unlike many other pump designs, they can be run dry for a period of time without causing damage. This feature is very nice when you have a short break in material at your suction end. When this happens, you won’t have to worry about repairing or replacing your equipment.

As you can see there are plenty great reasons for choosing this type of pump. However, there are also scenarios when a different pump design will be more effective and efficient. Let’s take a look at a couple examples where you may want to explore some other options. If you have any questions regarding which option is best for your operations, head over to the ESP pump product page for more details. You can also contact us if you need additional help.

Disadvantages of Rotary Lobe Pumps

One disadvantage of this equipment is the fact that timing gears are required which are located in the gearbox. The timing gears prevent the lobes from making contact, which is a great feature of this design. However, the gears are an additional piece of equipment that need maintained and replaced from time to time

A second instant when a rotary pump may not be the best choice is when you are dealing with lower viscosity type fluids. The lack of performance in this situation is due to the fact that there are larger clearances between lobes than other positive displacement pump styles. The low viscosity fluid makes its way between the lobes and is not transferred efficiently

So what industries are commonly using these rotary lobe pumps?

Operations and Applications That Use These Pumps

Here is a short list of industries and applications that commonly use rotary lobe pumps. Many of them, such as food processing, need to be able to pass solids or high viscosity fluid through the pump without causing damage and that is one reason why they are very popular.

Common industries…

·       Paper

·       Soap

·       Paint

·       Rubber

·       Pharmaceuticals
